What should you hire: a motorboat or a yacht?

For smaller rivers and canals, first check whether the chosen boat can make the passage. Dimensions, draught, bridge clearance, water levels and traffic restrictions all matter. The word motorboat does not guarantee access to every canal, and a Neva trip does not automatically include the gulf.

Motorboats are often chosen for small groups and city sightseeing. Compare motor yachts if you need a separate cabin lounge, table, sleeping cabins or more space to socialise. This is a search guide, not a promise of facilities: some motorboats have cabins, and yacht layouts vary considerably.

Look at photos of seating, passageways and the enclosed area. Ask about a toilet, rain protection, heating, music and space for food. Passenger capacity and the number of comfortable dining seats are different measures.

In the current catalogue, compare capacity and rates for specific models on the same date and for the same duration. Then add agreed charges for arrival at the pier, food, service, decorations and extensions. A larger vessel is not necessarily the best choice for a short trip for two.

Give the date, guest count, preferred route, time on the water and total budget. List essential facilities and any needs of children or guests with reduced mobility. Ask for two or three specific options with photographs and a plan for changing weather.
