River vessel classification: what to check before a trip

Motorboat, yacht and riverboat help describe the kind of trip. Class and vessel documents concern technical operating conditions. Within its remit, the Russian Classification Society assigns and confirms classes, issues relevant documents and establishes operating areas and conditions.

Descriptions of river vessels may use class symbols such as M, O, R and L, with additional symbols in a class notation. A short article table is not authorisation for a particular voyage. The full notation, the chosen vessel’s current documents and the agreed operating area need to be considered together.

Ask the organiser whether the boat can operate the proposed route, how many guests it may carry and what weather conditions could change the trip. Canal routes also need checks on dimensions and bridge passage; gulf trips need confirmation of access and an alternative route. Appearance or size alone cannot answer these questions.

Even a suitable vessel does not mean a trip in any weather. The captain decides before departure in light of actual conditions. Agree how route changes, rescheduling and cancellation will be handled before booking; clear terms are more useful than an all-weather promise.
