White Nights in St Petersburg: planning a boat trip

White Nights are the long summer twilight, with June and early July the main period to consider for a visit. They are a seasonal phenomenon, not a daily show with a single start time. Check sunset, the forecast and the boat’s actual departure time separately for your chosen date.

Choose the evening’s main focus. Sunset, late twilight and watching the drawbridges may need different departure times. If bridges are central to your plans, check the current schedule and restrictions for the date; last year’s times and music programme do not confirm today’s trip.

In the centre, discuss views of the Hermitage, Peter and Paul Fortress and the Spit. Choose a few backgrounds and allow time between them. Try your camera settings beforehand: twilight on a moving boat is harder to photograph than a stationary embankment. Light and sky colour depend on the weather.
